Brady Technologies and Bruce Power: Adapting to Ontario’s Market Renewal Programme

Executive summary

Bruce Power uses Brady Technologies’ Data Manager (EDM) to manage its electricity market operations. With the launch of Ontario’s Market Renewal Programme (MRP) on 1 May 2025, Bruce Power needed to adapt its systems to comply with new market requirements. Brady and Bruce Power collaborated to understand the changes and ensure Bruce Power’s systems were ready for a successful transition and go-live.

“This is an important milestone for Bruce Power and Brady Technologies as the Ontario market evolves. This shows our commitment to ensuring our Data Manager software remains compliant with ongoing market changes, clean energy penetration increases and continued market improvements. Having been present and working at Bruce Power on 1 May 2002 when the market opened, I am pleased that Brady continues to be a leading software provider in this energy market to this day.”

The Market Renewal Programme changes

Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) launched the MRP on 1 May 2025, introducing fundamental changes to the wholesale electricity market:

  • Single Schedule Market (SSM): Replaced the two-schedule system to align pricing and dispatch.
  • Day-Ahead Market (DAM): Introduced day-ahead commitments for resources.
  • Enhanced Real-Time Unit Commitment (ERUC): Optimised real-time scheduling.

These changes required:

  • New reporting formats and protocols
  • Updates to existing reports
  • Compliance with updated security standards

The Market Renewal Programme changes

Bruce Power, operating eight nuclear units and providing up to 30% of Ontario’s electricity, needed to ensure its systems could handle the MRP requirements while maintaining continuous operations.

Project approach

Brady Technologies and Bruce Power worked together to:

  • Develop a shared understanding of all MRP changes Identify required system modifications
  • Implement updates to settlements and dispatch reports
  • Ensure compliance with new reporting requirements

These activities followed Brady’s standard enterprise delivery processes.

Results

Successful go-live:

  • Everything was ready for the MRP launch with no rollbacks required.
  • Smooth transition: Bruce Power’s operations continued without disruption.
  • Stable post-launch operations: As at July 2025-two months post go-live-systems continued to function effectively under the new market structure.
