Settlement in Spain
In a stable, predictable power system, working out who owes whom what is relatively straightforward. That is not the case with Spain’s power system in 2026, however.
Renewables now supply well over half of Spain’s electricity, with solar PV capacity alone reaching 48 GW after a record year of installations. This fundamentally changes the settlement challenge. Solar and wind generation is inherently variable; output shifts with weather, seasons, and time of day, and more variable generation means more imbalances, more balancing market activity, and significantly more data to process at finer time intervals.
At the same time, Spain is aligning with European market harmonisation efforts. The country joined the PICASSO and MARI balancing platforms in 2025, enabling cross-border balancing energy exchanges. Coal generation is being phased out entirely, while 14 GW of battery storage is planned by 2030, a rapidly proliferating new asset type with its own settlement requirements.
For market participants, this all translates to one thing: settlement is becoming ever more complex, and the margin for error is shrinking.
